At 1:32 AM May 22 Saskatoon Police responded to John G. Diefenbaker International Airport regarding a Canadian Northern Airlines Boeing 737 on final with the starboard engine on fire. The pilot was able to make an emergency landing on Runway 33 where Airport Fire Authorities extinguished the blaze.
The 5 crew members and 102 passengers evacuated the aircraft with no injuries. The passengers have been taken to the Air Terminal until lodgings are arranged at local hotels.
The Chartered aircraft Flight 1714 had departed from Horizon near Fort McMurray with a scheduled landing in Saskatoon to deboard 5 passengers. The aircraft was to continue to Montreal with the remaining passengers.
The cause of the engine fire will be further investigated by Transport Canada.
