The Saskatoon Police Service would like to alert the public and district merchants to a rash of recent pin pad thefts/skims.
The thefts and skims have occurred when a disturbance is created to distract the clerks attention. The suspects will then disconnect the pin pad from the terminal and steal them or exchange them for one that has been tampered with to record debit and credit card numbers.
Here are some precautions businesses can take to prevent the thefts:
-ensure employees place pin pads underneath the counter in a secure location until they are needed for use.
-if not in service, treat them like cash and store the pin pad in a secure location
-label or engrave the pin pad so it can easily be identified as having been exchanged.
-conduct a daily check to ensure that the pin pad original has not been tampered with.
