Public Advisory-Fraud Alert

The Saskatoon Police Service has received a number of complaints regarding fraudulent purchases made with stolen or non existent credit card accounts.

The fraud involves merchants taking VISA/Master Card numbers over the telephone or across sales counters and manually typing the numbers into the VISA/Master Card terminals. The terminal accepts the transaction, however it is returned upon being deposited into the merchant's financial institution.

The resulting loss is worn by the merchant as the card has not been swiped. The transactions are usually over the $1,000.00 range so the temptation by commission sales staff is to make the sale.

For further information please contact Det. Sgt. Dave Malanovich of the Saskatoon Police Fraud Unit at 227-5042.
