The Saskatoon Police Service Air Support Unit was instrumental in assisting ground units at several incidents overnight which resulted in a variety of charges being laid and tickets being issued.
At 1:45 a.m. an alarm company advised police that an alarm had been set off at a house in the 400 block of Lloyd Crescent. The homeowner then called police to report that a male was breaking into the garage and was able to provided a very good description of the suspect. The Air Support Unit observed a male matching the description walking in the 3800 block of Diefenbaker Drive and directed ground units to that location. Through further investigation it was confirmed this was the suspect who had broken into the home. A 26 year old man has been charged with break & enter and breach of undertaking. (08-119004)
Just after 2:00 a.m. police were called to an address in the 2900 block of 33rd Street West in relation to a person who was under court order not to be at that address and who had caused some damage to the home. Air Support observed the suspect leaving the yard and directed ground units to his location. A 28 year old man has been charged with wilful damage under $5,000, breach of probation and five counts of breach of undertaking. (08-119010)
At approximately 2:30 a.m. police received a call about a possible impaired driver in the area of College Drive and Preston Avenue. The caller provided updated information regarding direction of travel and description of the suspect vehicle until the Air Support Unit located it. Air Support then directed ground units and the vehicle was stopped in the area of 5th Street and Munroe Avenue. A roadside breath test was done with the suspect and a 21 year old male was issued with a 24 hour suspension. (08-119021)
Just minutes later a Patrol Sergeant observed a car travelling at a very high rate of speed and heading eastbound at 51st Street and Miners Avenue. The Air Support Unit observed what they believed to be the same vehicle driving very erratically in the area and again directed ground units into position to stop the vehicle in the 100 block of Pinehouse Drive. After a roadside breath test, a 25 year old man was issued a 24 hour suspension along with summary offence tickets for having an unregistered motor vehicle and driving while disqualified. A 31 year old female in the vehicle was issued a ticket under the Alcohol and Gaming Regulations Act for having liquor in the motor vehicle. (08-118867)
In addition to the above incidents, police were kept busy attending 17 traffic accidents which occurred overnight. The Saskatoon Police Service continues to encourage drivers to slow down and use extra caution in winter driving conditions.
