Saskatoon Police and members of Saskatoon Fire and Protective Services attended a motor vehicle accident which occurred in the area of Avenue M and 22nd street just before noon on February 28th, 2008.
A semi tractor unit and a mid sized car were traveling east bound on 22nd street from Avenue P. The tractor unit occupied the center lane and the car was in the curb lane. The semi tractor changes lanes causing contact with the car, and dragged it some distance before the vehicles could separate. When the car disengaged from the semi close to Avenue M, it continued its path of travel into a fence and then a house, damaging the exterior gas meter.
A 49 year old female and lone occupant of the car sustained injuries to her lower body when a piece wood penetrated the vehicle. Fire and Protective Services were able to remove the female from the vehicle using the jaws of life, and she was taken to hospital by ambulance for treatment of serious, but non life threatening injuries. The operator of the semi tractor was not injured.
Fire fighters shut off the gas to the residence, and Sask Energy has been called to attend the scene. A Saskatoon Police Service Collision Re-constructionist is at the accident scene, as well as members of the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance Unit.
Police are still investigating the accident and charges may be pending. Saskatoon Police request that motorists refrain from traveling in the area and look for an alternate route as traffic is shut down for vehicles traveling north and south bound on Avenue M, and east bound on 22nd street from Avenue L to Avenue P.
