Saskatoon Police have identified the deceased man located at the scene of an incident in the 500 block of Avenue Q North yesterday. Joshua John Robert Megeney, DOB 88/09/12, of Medicine Hat, Alberta was found inside the home that had been the location of a reported break and enter and barricaded person.
The incident is being investigated by members of the Major Crime Unit. Preliminary investigation shows that shots were fired by members of the SPS. A request has also been made to the Department of Justice to assign another agency to provide oversight.
At approximately 9:15 a.m., October 6, 2016, Police officers attended to a residence in the 500 block of Avenue Q North after reports of a break and enter in progress. The complainant reported seeing an unknown person inside the residence and also alerted officers that he stores several firearms and ammunition inside the home. Members of Patrol, the Tactical Support and Canine Units, attended and began clearing the residence. Officers located a man inside a bedroom of the residence and observed him to be in possession of a long-barreled firearm. SPS officers engaged with the suspect and shots were fired. They then exited the residence and established a perimeter. Additional members of Patrol, the Tactical Support and Canine Units, along with members of the Explosives Disposal Unit, attended the residence. Repeated attempts to make contact with the suspect inside were not successful. At approximately 4:30 p.m. officers made entry into the bedroom and located a deceased male.
An autopsy is being conducted today, however it may be some time before the results and cause of death is known.
