A 17 year old boy is facing charges following an incident involving a stolen vehicle which evaded police.
At approximately 10:30 March 7, 2017, Patrol officers were dealing with a stolen vehicle which had been located in the 300 block of Avenue H when they spotted a second stolen vehicle driving past. The Hyundai Sonata had been reported stolen earlier in the day from a restaurant parking lot on 22nd Street and Avenue W. Officers immediately began following the vehicle and attempted a traffic stop. The lone male driver refused to stop, drove through a stop sign and began traveling on the wrong side of the road on 17th Street West. At that time the Air Support Unit began observing the vehicle from the air, allowing ground units to discontinue following the vehicle. The suspect was then seen abandoning the vehicle in the 100 block of Ave O South. Officers then spotted him dropping an object on the ground and entering a convenience store at 22nd Street and Avenue P. Officers responded to the store and arrested the 17 year old. He was found to be in possession of a bag containing clothes which matched the clothing worn by the stolen auto suspect in surveillance video. Officers were also able to locate the item thrown in the snow. It was found to be a hatchet with an engraving of the suspect's name.
The 17 year old is facing charges of theft of motor vehicle, possession of stolen property, possession of a weapon and was also found to be unlawfully at large. He will be appearing in Saskatoon Provincial Court on Wednesday, March 8, 2017.
