Public Advisory - Stolen Vehicles On Buy/Sell Websites

The Saskatoon Police Service is warning the public of stolen vehicle sales on buy and sell websites. Police have become aware of an emerging trend involving sellers having their vehicles stolen, or buyers purchasing stolen vehicles.

Here are a few tips to prevent yourself from becoming a victim of theft or unknowingly being in possession of stolen property:

  • Record the license plate number on the vehicle of the person you are doing business with.
  • Take a picture of the persons driver’s license – ensure validity.
  • Ensure the seller’s license matches their registration.
  • Remove the registration from the vehicle you are selling.
  • Go with the person for the test drive – have a cell phone with you in case of an emergency.
  • Check Vehicle Identification Number with SGI to confirm there are no issues.
  • Check the VIN on the CPIC website
  • Check for loans or liens on the vehicle -
  • Ask about the vehicle’s history - If the seller can’t answer questions about the vehicle or just came to own it, there is cause for concern that it may in fact, be stolen.

If you believe someone is attempting to sell a suspected stolen vehicle, please call the SPS at (306) 975-8300 or Crime Stoppers at 1 (800) 222-8477.
