Saskatoon Police deployed a conducted energy weapon (CEW), yesterday in the SPS Detention Centre after a man in custody attempted to disarm a member of their firearm.
At approximately 12:00 a.m., August 6, 2018, Officers in Detention were transferring a man in custody from his cell to a separate area of Detention where he was to appear before a Justice of the Peace. During the transfer, the suspect lunged at a male officer and attempted to disarm the member of his firearm. A brief altercation ensued and a second officer successfully deployed a CEW. The man was placed back in handcuffs before being transported to hospital as a precaution. The officers involved were not injured.
The 31 year old man is charged with Assaulting an Officer and Attempting to Disarm an Officer.
The CEW deployment will be reviewed in accordance with policy.
