On Thursday 22nd November 2018 at 10:51pm, a SPS Patrol unit spotted a stolen vehicle being driven near Idylwyld Drive and 33rd Street and attempted to initiate a vehicle stop. The driver of the stolen vehicle did not stop and drove in such a dangerous manner that police terminated their pursuit as soon as they started it.
The Air Support Unit monitored the vehicle and subsequently alerted ground units that the vehicle was continuing to drive at high speeds and into oncoming traffic. Ground units set up in several locations on the east side of the city with the intent of deploying stop sticks to deflate the tyres, as the continuing actions of the driver had created a high risk to the public safety.
Police were successful in deploying stop sticks and deflated 3 of the vehicles tyres. Although the vehicle was driving much slower the driver was still driving dangerously and heading for 8th Street so ground units moved into position to box the vehicle in to bring it to a stop. The driver of the stolen vehicle sideswiped one the the police vehicles but police were successful in stopping the vehicle.
A 29 year old male was arrested and is now in police custody until he appears in front of a Judge at court on 23rd November. He is facing 2 charges of possession of stolen property, assault of a police officer with a weapon, dangerous driving, fail to stop for police and breaches of his court ordered conditions.
While 3 police vehicles received minor damage no one was injured in the incident.
