EXXPLORE Emergency Services - May 4, 2019

On Saturday, May 4, 2019, the Saskatoon Police Service and the Saskatoon Fire Department will host, for the second year in a row, a unique event highlighting careers in emergency services to women and girls.

EXXPLORE Emergency Services is a one day showcase to raise awareness in the community and educate women and girls on the possibilities and the dynamic nature of careers in both Police and Fire. The ultimate goal of the event is to increase the number of female applicants to both professions.

“Over the years, I have seen how policewomen add value by possessing skills and attributes that are unique from their male counterparts,” says Tonya Gresty, a Sergeant with the Saskatoon Police Service. “Time and again, I see the most successful outcomes when both men and women use their individual strengths and work in collaboration to provide the best service to the people of Saskatoon.”

The event will take place at the Saskatoon Police Service Headquarters on May 4, 2019, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. There will be opportunities for participants to engage in activities that are unique to both professions, including trying on equipment and gear, visiting the indoor gun range and learning about the physical requirements of both careers.

“Increasing the number of female applicants in these underrepresented professions begins with awareness,” says Viki Cirkvencic, a Firefighter and Surface Water Coordinator with the Saskatoon Fire Department. “That’s what this event has been designed to offer – awareness and the opportunity to explore an ultimately very rewarding career that may not have otherwise been considered.”

Registration for EXXPLORE is now open. To register, e-mail exxplore@saskatoon.ca to indicate your interest. You will be notified by e-mail that your registration was successful and further instructions will be provided at that time.
