Update - CEW Deployed After Suspect Attempts To Flee Hospital While In Police Custody

A 43-year-old man that resisted arrest yesterday for shoplifting will be facing additional charges after attempting to escape Police custody last night.

Yesterday afternoon, Police were called to a business in the 300 block of Confederation Drive after a man was caught shoplifting. Following his arrest, the suspect was transported to hospital for treatment as a precaution.

At approximately 8:30 p.m., while at hospital in Police custody, the suspect attempted to flee. A physical altercation ensued between the suspect and officer, and a CEW was deployed twice but did not aid the Officer in subduing the subject. He was eventually taken into custody with assistance from members of Hospital Security.

The man remains in hospital and Police are reviewing the incident.

Additional charges are pending.

A 43 year old man is facing charges following an incident on April 2, 2019 in which an SPS officer deployed a conducted energy weapon.

At 1:12 p.m., police were called to a mall in the 300 block of Confederation Drive for a male shoplifter who was known to also have outstanding arrest warrants for Assault with a Weapon and Theft Under $5000. When an officer arrived, the male tried to flee. Following a foot chase, the suspect was caught but began resisting arrest, making threats to stab the officer with a needle. During the confrontation, a CEW was deployed but proved ineffective.  

The male is facing is facing charges of Theft Under $5000, Assault Police Officer, and has 4 warrants for his arrest.

The incident will be reviewed in accordance with Policy.
