The Saskatoon Police Service and SGI are teaming up to reduce the number of collisions at some of Saskatoons busiest intersections.
The Service has identified the ten locations where collisions most frequently occur. Thanks to funding from SGI signs have been produced and will be posted at each of these intersections to raise awareness about safety and warn drivers to take extra caution.
Improving safety by reducing the number and severity of collisions and injuries at intersections is one of SGIs high priority areas, says SGI President Jon Schubert. Safety interventions that combine awareness and enforcement are proven to be more effective than those that rely on only one of these approaches. This project with the Saskatoon Police Service is designed to capitalize on both.
The intersections are listed beginning with the highest number of collisions, and are based on the number of reported accidents to the Saskatoon Police Service over a six year period.
1. Diefenbaker Drive & 22nd Street
2. Warman Road & Lenore Drive
3. Avenue H & 22nd Street
4. McKercher Drive & 8th Street
5. Millar Avenue & 51st Street
6. Arlington Avenue & Taylor Street
7. Avenue P & 20th Street
8. Preston Avenue & College Drive
9. Millar Avenue & Circle Drive
10. 22nd Street & Avenue P
Many factors contribute to high collision intersections, says Police Chief Clive Weighill. The Saskatoon Police Service is hoping that by raising awareness through these signs and increasing the presence of, and enforcement by Police, we will be able to lower the number of avoidable collisions.
The media is invited to an official unveiling of the signs Tuesday, May 29th, 2007 at
11 a.m., at the corner of Warman Road and Lenore Drive.
