Saskatoon Police are continuing to investigate after a stolen truck was observed by Police last night and then evaded Police before colliding with another vehicle.
Shortly before 9:00 p.m., June 19, 2017, Patrol officers observed a stolen vehicle in the area of Avenue D North and 33rd Street West. The Air Support Unit (ASU) was able to locate the vehicle from the sky and tracked it to Clearwater Place. There, ASU members observed two males and a female exit the vehicle. ASU identified that the suspects had exited the vehicle and it was determined that this was a safe opportunity to take them into custody. Officers then attempted a high risk traffic stop, however upon seeing Police, the two males immediately got back into the truck. In their attempts to flee the area, the suspect vehicle rammed one Police cruiser. An SPS member discharged their firearm at the suspect vehicle during this event. ASU continued to track the suspect vehicle and investigation shows that the suspect vehicle reached speeds of approximately 150 km/hr, before striking a civilian vehicle turning left onto Airport Drive from Circle Drive.
The driver of the suspect vehicle, a 22-year-old man, was pronounced deceased at the scene. An autopsy has been scheduled for Thursday, June 22, 2017.
The passenger of the suspect vehicle, a 33-year-old man, was transported to hospital as a precaution and has since been released into Police custody. He was arrested on outstanding warrants for Possession of Proceeds of Crime, Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle, Theft, Possession of Property Obtained by Crime, Obstruction of a Police Officer, Aggravated Assault and Unlawful Confinement.
The SPS officer, a female Constable, who was in the patrol car that was struck on Clearwater Place, was taken to hospital and later released with non-life threatening injuries.
The civilian that was struck at Airport Drive and Circle Drive was also transported to hospital as a precaution and then released.
The truck had been reported stolen at approximately 3:45 a.m., June 19, 2017. Prior to the collision, it had been involved in another incident where its driver evaded Police. It was also the subject of a report of suspicious activity from residents in north Saskatoon. Following the collision, a firearm and ammunition were located inside the truck, and investigators determined it had been stolen with a key inside.
