Traffic Safety Advisory - U-Turns In School Zones Prohibited

March 19, 2018 10:32 AM

The previous advisory should have stated that school zone regulations are in effect from September to June.

We apologize for the error.

The Saskatoon Police Service Traffic Unit wishes to remind all motorists that, under the Traffic Bylaw, U-Turns are prohibited anywhere in the city within school zones.

In recent weeks, police have noticed an increase in violations and complaints regarding this issue. Violations are occurring primarily during dismissal times in elementary schools while traffic is heavy with parents picking children up.

U-Turns are dangerous because children who are walking, running and playing in the area may not anticipate the change in a vehicle's direction. Similarly, as drivers are performing a u-turn their blind spots change and they may not be able to see what is happening in the area outside the vehicle.

The Traffic Unit will be focusing on this issue all week. The fine for making a U-Turn in a school zone is $90.

Motorists are also urged to slow to 30 km/h in school zones and to obey all parking regulations in place near schools.

All school zone traffic laws are in effect from 8 AM to 5 PM, Monday to Friday, June to September.
