Arrest - Evade Police / Assault P.O. - Avenue R North And 23rd Street West

One man is facing a number of charges after nearly striking multiple police officers with a vehicle while fleeing a traffic stop early this morning.

On September 1, 2026 at approximately 2:55 a.m., an officer conducted a traffic stop on a truck in the area of Avenue R North and 23rd Street West. The officer spoke with the driver who continually provided a false name.

As the driver was being informed he was under arrest for personation, he began to drive away, nearly striking multiple police officers. The truck continued to evade at a high rate of speed with disregard for public safety.

The Air Support Unit (ASU) was able to monitor the truck as it was observed eventually colliding with the front deck of a house in the 200 block of Whitney Avenue South. The driver began to flee on foot before being arrested shortly after.

Further investigation determined that the man was wanted on two outstanding warrants and the truck had been stolen. As a result, the 56-year-old man has been charged with:

  • Resisting Arrest;
  • Assaulting a Police Officer (x4);
  • Evading Police;
  • Theft of a Motor Vehicle;
  • Fraudulently Impersonating Another Person; and
  • Mischief.

Three passengers of the truck were also taken into custody but were later released with no charges.
