The Saskatoon Police Service (SPS) is proud to announce it has joined The Kidney Foundation of Canada’s Living Donor Circle of Excellence (CoE), becoming the first police service in North America to receive this recognition and the second organization in Saskatchewan to do so.
The Living Donor Circle of Excellence recognizes employers that help remove financial barriers for employees who choose to become living organ donors by providing wage replacement or other financial support during their recovery.
The SPS’s commitment was inspired by Constable Chris Martin, who made the personal decision to donate a kidney. His experience prompted the Service to consider how it could better support employees who may choose to make a potentially life-changing gift.
“Cst. Martin’s decision to donate a kidney is a remarkable example of compassion and what it means to ‘Be the Difference’,” says Saskatoon Police Chief Cameron McBride. “In turn, he inspired us, as an employer, to consider how we can make a difference. Joining the Living Donor Circle of Excellence reflects our commitment to our people and helps reduce the financial barriers they may face when making a potentially life-changing gift.”
For Constable Martin, the decision to donate reflected both a personal commitment and the values that guide police service.
“Donation may have been a personal decision, but when you consider that as a police officer, preserving life is what we are called to do, it seemed natural,” says Constable Chris Martin. “That it has created something lasting within the SPS is a fantastic side effect. These policies support employees financially during recovery and give everyone considering donation one less thing to worry about. I’m proud to work for an organization that supports its people in making a difference and can lead by example in the community and beyond.”
By joining the CoE, the SPS reinforces its commitment to employee wellness, compassion, and community leadership. The Service hopes its participation will encourage others to learn more about living organ donation and the role employers can play in supporting those who choose to donate.

The need for organs for transplantation is much greater than the available supply. The waitlist for a donation from a deceased donor can be long; the median wait time is 3.7 years. Many wait much longer and some will die waiting.
Living organ donation is a selfless gift, that reduces the wait time for those receiving the donation and shortens the waitlist for others.
The Kidney Foundation of Canada is a strategic partner for the Living Donor Circle of Excellence (CoE) program, in collaboration with the American Society of Transplantation (AST) and the Canadian Society of Transplantation (CST). The CoE program recognizes employers that implement a wage replacement policy for employees who are living organ donors. This support helps ensure that financial concerns do not stand in the way of someone choosing to save a life.
By collaborating with employers, government, and the transplant community, The Kidney Foundation is helping create a culture where living donation is recognized as a profound act of generosity, and where everyone in Saskatchewan who wishes to give the gift of life can do so without financial hardship.
The Kidney Foundation welcomes the opportunity to work with more local champions and organizations across Saskatchewan to expand the Living Donor Circle of Excellence program and strengthen support for living donors.
