A man is facing charges after assaulting a woman early Sunday morning.
At approximately 6:45 a.m., September 20, 2020, Patrol officers responded to a report that a woman was being assaulted in an alley in the 200 block of Avenue D South. When Police arrived, the suspect immediately fled on foot. Further investigation found that the man is said to have encountered the woman in front of a nearby business and lead her into a back alley where he physically and sexually assaulted her. The canine unit attended and was successful in locating the suspect who was transported to hospital for treatment of dog bites, before being taken to SPS Detention.
As the suspect exited the patrol vehicle upon arrival at SPS Detention, he immediately fled on foot and attempted to escape custody by climbing a fence.
The 31-year-old man is charged with Assault, Sexual Assault, Escape Lawful Custody, and Breach of Court Conditions.
The suspect is believed to have been under the influence of an intoxicant.
The victim sustained minor injuries but refused treatment at the scene.
The suspect and victim are not believed to have known each other.
