New Year's Eve Sobriety Checkpoints

The Saskatoon Police Service will be teaming up with law enforcement partners from several other agencies on New Year’s Eve to conduct sobriety checkpoints in order to deter impaired driving and to apprehend drivers impaired by drugs or alcohol.

The RCMP, Corman Park Police, Saskatchewan Highway Patrol, and CP Rail Police will join SPS members for this initiative.

Volunteers from MADD Canada will also be on hand to express thanks to motorists who choose to drive while sober.

Motorists are reminded that driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs can result in serious sanctions, including criminal charges, immediate roadside suspensions, and vehicle impoundments. In Saskatchewan, there is zero tolerance for driving with any amount of drugs in your system.

If motorists encounter a checkpoint, they are advised to slow down and look for directions given by a police officer.

So far in December, 43 drivers have been charged or suspended for impaired driving in Saskatoon (55 for same period in 2019).

Anyone needing to get around after consuming alcohol or drugs is encouraged to use one of many alternate services available, like public transit, ride share companies, taxis and designated driver services while respecting public health requirements.

The Saskatoon Police Service would like to wish everyone a safe, healthy, and happy New Year's Eve.
