A police officer sustained minor injuries while attempting to arrest a person wanted on warrants earlier this afternoon.
Shortly after 1:00 p.m., July 5, 2021, an off-duty police officer recognized an individual who had warrants for his arrest in the 2900 block of 8th Street East. The man was approached a short time later by a responding police officer, in a parking lot in the 3300 block of 8th Street East, where the suspect brandished a firearm and fled into the mall. He was observed exiting through a different set of doors and fled through several nearby residential backyards. A canine unit successfully located the suspect in the 200 block of Leland Court. During the arrest, a physical altercation ensued where the suspect spit in the face of a police officer who also sustained a minor injury to their hand.
The suspect was arrested on warrants.
The firearm has not yet been located, but the investigation is continuing.
