Public Advisory: Relative Scam

The Saskatoon Police are warning the public about a phone scam that has recently resurfaced.

The SPS has received complaints that a person has called and stated that a member of their family is in trouble with Police and is in need of financial assistance to make bail, pay a ticket, etc. The victim is then directed on how to send money, by this person posing as an officer or a lawyer.

The SPS does not contact people in this manner. If you are faced with a phone call of this nature, we would encourage you to use extreme caution, especially when being asked to send emergency money. Ask important questions of the caller to try to verify their identity. Ask for a phone number to call the "relative" back once you have checked with other relatives. If you suspect fraud, contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre or the Saskatoon Police Service.
