Arrests - Laser Pointed At SPS Air Support Unit During Theft Attempts

Two men are facing charges after pointing a laser at the SPS airplane on Monday, while attempting to break into vehicles.

At approximately 2:15 a.m., November 13, 2023, the SPS Air Support Unit was targeted and struck by a green laser. The ASU was able to locate the person aiming the laser in their direction and directed ground units to the area of the 1600 block of 8th Avenue North. The ASU also observed the suspect, along with another male trying to enter a shed and several vehicles, one attempt was successful. With guidance from the ASU, a 26-year-old man and a 33-year-old man were taken into custody by Patrol officers. The 26-year-old man was found to be in possession of a laser.

The 26-year-old man is charged with Possession of Stolen Property, Possession of Identity Documents Relating to Another Person and had a Canada Wide Warrant for Breach of Statutory Release. He will also be charged under the Canadian Aviation Regulation Act. The 33-year-old man was charged with Possession of Stolen Property.

Police wish to remind the public of the dangers associated to pointing a laser at an aircraft.
