SPS Launches Intimate Partner Violence Response Team

In a proactive effort to address high rates of intimate partner violence (IPV), the Saskatoon Police Service (SPS) has launched a new Intimate Partner Violence Response Team (IPVRT). The initiative, which began in January 2025, is a collaborative partnership with Family Service Saskatoon aimed at providing a more compassionate, coordinated, and effective response to domestic-related violence.

The multidisciplinary team consists of a dedicated SPS constable and a Family Service Saskatoon outreach worker who jointly respond to calls involving intimate partner violence, sexual violence, and other forms of harm or aggression within relationships. Domestic-related incidents remain among the top five most frequent calls for service.

With a focus on survivor support, prevention, and targeted intervention, the IPVRT provides consistent follow-up, conducts routine checks on offenders, and ensures enforcement of court-imposed conditions. The team also facilitates access to programs and services that address the root causes of violence. When existing interventions prove insufficient, the team works together to develop a tailored safety and support plan to meet the unique needs of each situation.

“By combining law enforcement with community-based supports, the IPVRT is changing the way we respond to intimate partner violence,” says Richard Bueckert, Inspector of the Investigative Services Division. “This approach not only enhances immediate safety but also promotes long-term stability and healing for survivors. It’s about building trust and providing a pathway out of violence.”

In addition to responding to incidents, the IPVRT is also developing specialized training for SPS members to build internal capacity and strengthen the overall police response to IPV-related calls.
