A Conducted Energy Weapon (CEW) was deployed early this morning after a man assaulted two Saskatoon Police Officers during a Traffic Stop.

On the 6th July 2019 at 01:04am a marked police vehicle conducted a vehicle stop in the 1000 Block of McKercher Drive. The female driver was detained for an impaired driving investigation and the male passenger was told he was free to leave. Instead of leaving he tried to gain entry into the police vehicle and attacked the two officers. As the physical fight continued, officers realised that to prevent further injury to the officers and to gain control of the aggressive and combative male the decision was make to deploy a CEW once with immediate effect and the officers were able to safely handcuff and secure the male.

Both the officers and the male suspect sustained minor injuries and were treated at the scene by Medavie Health Services. The 36 year old male was transported to detention cells where he was charged with two counts of Assaulting a Police Officer and will appear in front of Justice of the Peace later today. Alcohol and Illicit drugs were a factor.

The female driver was released on a roadside suspension of 120 days along with a vehicle impoundment of 14 days.

As with all CEW deployments, this incident will be reviewed in accordance with policy.
