Two people are facing a number of charges following an altercation with a cab driver on Saturday night.
At approximately 10:15 p.m., August 12, 2023, Patrol officers responded to Ruth Street and Lorne Avenue after a cab driver reported a physical altercation with two passengers. A nearby man fleeing the area was identified as the suspect who was also reported to not have paid for the cab ride. Officers pursued the suspect on-foot and arrested him without further incident. He appeared to be under the influence of an intoxicant and blood was observed on him. At this time, other officers arrested a female suspect nearby, who was also believed to be involved. As she was being placed under arrest, she became combative and assaulted an officer. Two other victims, aside from the cab driver, were located nearby suffering from non-life threatening injuries. One of them was transported to hospital for treatment.
Upon further investigation, police learned that upon arrival to their destination, the suspects refused to pay their cab fare and an altercation took place resulting in the 47-year-old driver being assaulted, prior to the suspects fleeing. The two other victims, ages 16 and 18, who were unknown to the cab driver and suspects, observed the altercation and attempted to intervene when they were also assaulted by the male suspect.
A 25-year-old man is charged with Aggravated Assault, Assault, Fraud and Breach of Conditions.
A 20-year-old woman is charged with Assault and Assaulting a Police Officer.
