A man was arrested and is facing charges after evading police in a stolen vehicle Monday evening.
On July 1, 2024 at approximately 7:50 p.m. police located a stolen vehicle driving northbound on Clarence Avenue South and 12th Street East. Officers followed the vehicle without initiating their emergency lights and sirens in order to maintain public safety.
The vehicle continued Southbound on Clarence Avenue South towards College Drive before turning onto the University Bridge. A tire deflation device was deployed; however, it was unsuccessful. The vehicle then drove through Kinsmen Park before exiting into the City Park neighbourhood and then exiting onto Circle Drive East at a high rate of speed.
The vehicle turned Southbound on Highway 11 where a second tire deflation device was deployed but was once again unsuccessful. Police then disengaged to keep public safety before re-engaging as the vehicle drove down a grid road at a high rate of speed. The vehicle eventually collided with a fence and the driver exited the vehicle and fled on foot. The SPS K9 unit was deployed and the K9 successfully stopped the driver allowing police to take them into custody.
As a result, a 19-year-old man was arrested and is facing charges relating to dangerous driving, evading police, mischief, theft over $5000, as well as breaching court-ordered conditions.
